The 1966 Figeac replicates its performance at the vertical in June 2015. Deep in colour, it has a vibrant, you could almost say life-affirming bouquet that articulates as much the Cabernet as the Merlot. And just like previous bottles, give it a few minutes in the glass and subtle mint-like aromas nudge you over to Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied, not quite as extravagant as previous bottles, but armed with fine tannin and a harmonious, precise finish that just feels so effortless. In decline after more than half a century? Not in the slightest! This 1966 marches on. Tasted at Christies' Figeac dinner with Marie-France Manoncourt. (NM) - VM

A very dry year. Transparent ruby. Light, fully mature and very charming with light hints of tobacco leaves. Now it's soft. Transparent flavours. Light, delicate and beautiful. Firm finish. Wonderfully long. Frédéric Faye reminded me that yields would have been as much as 70 hl/ha then! - JR

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. The 1966 Figeac is a brilliant Saint Emilion that must rank as one of the best Right Banks of the vintage that is more reputed for its Left Bank wines. Deep in color, it has a magnificent, majestic bouquet that knocks you out: very perfumed and floral with a hint of peppermint developing with time. It is actually quite exotic for the normally conservative 1966 vintage. The palate is beautifully balanced and refined, here quite Left Bank in style with a fine line of acidity, filigree tannin and an effortless finish that will leave a Cheshire cat grin on your face. Pristine bottles such as this should be sought without hesitation. (NM) - WA

The 1966 Château Figeac is every bit as superb as the 1970, with perhaps not quite the same velvety palate impression today, but with this countered by a bit more vibrancy and bounce on the backend of the palate. The bouquet is à point and stunning, offering up scents of black cherries, mocha, nutskin, menthol, a beautifully complex base of gravel, a touch of cumin, cigar smoke and dried eucalyptus in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and shows off plenty of concentration at the core. The finish is long, tangy and focused, with superb complexity and grip, as well as just a whisper of remaining tannin. A thoroughly complete and classy vintage of Figeac. - JG
